What Is Facial Trauma?

Facial trauma refers to injuries to the jaw and face. These serious injuries can occur due to car accidents, falls, blows to the face, and sports accidents, among other causes.

Common traumatic facial injuries we treat include:

Dentoalveolar Trauma

This type of injury includes damage to the teeth, the bone around them, and the gums. It is considered one of the most serious dental conditions. The following injuries may occur:

  • Knocked-out (avulsed) or broken teeth
  • Fracture of the part of the jawbone that holds the teeth (alveolar process)
  • Cuts on the gum and other soft tissue

Fractured Jaw

A broken jaw needs specialty treatment from an oral surgeon to regain full function. Broken jaws cause severe discomfort, difficulty eating and drinking, and breathing problems. The jaw joints can also crack, break, or become dislocated from the skull.

Treatment of Facial Trauma

Patients should always seek emergency medical care if they are in a life-threatening situation. After the patient is stable, an oral surgeon can help them regain function in their teeth, gums, and jaws using specialized procedures.

Why Choose Davis Oral Surgery and Implant Center?

We provide expert care in a friendly, relaxing environment. Our compassionate office staff welcomes all patients and wants to ensure that patients have all the information they need to make decisions.

No matter how serious a patient’s injuries may be, we will do our best to make them comfortable and do as much as possible to save their teeth and jaws from further damage.

Frequently Asked Questions About Facial Trauma

What are the signs of a serious facial injury?

If patients notice a change in their breathing, eyesight, appearance, dental bite, or ability to swallow or speak, they should seek medical care before calling an oral surgeon. They may have a fracture in a facial bone if they have double vision, pain behind their eye, or blurry vision. They may also notice tingling or numbness in their lips and face.

What happens if a permanent tooth becomes loose in an accident?

We may be able to splint it to its neighbors to help the ligament holding the tooth in place to reattach. Patients will need to eat a soft diet while the tooth heals.

What should I do if I knock out a tooth?

If a patient’s tooth becomes completely knocked out, save it in a cup of saliva or milk and bring it to the oral surgeon. Ideally, reaching the doctor in 30 minutes to an hour will give the knocked-out tooth the best chance of replanting. We will replace the tooth in the socket and splint it to encourage reattachment.

Does a fractured jaw have to be wired shut?

Today, most fractures to the facial bones can receive small titanium plates and screws. A brief wiring period may be necessary if the jaw is very unstable.

Is it possible to prevent facial trauma?

One of the best ways to prevent traumatic injury for adults and children who play sports is to wear a mouthguard provided by a family dentist. A mouthguard protects teeth and gums from common injuries like falls and contact with fast-moving sporting equipment.

I’m not a patient at the center, but the help I have received from them is beyond words. I’m here at UCDavis to help my niece (19 year old international student) with her medical and dental care needs after an electric scooter accident. I work as an administrator in medical field in another State, it has been very hard for me to get things done that she needs here. I was looking for a dental surgeon after her jaw surgery, and nobody from School Student Health and insurance company could point me to the right direction. The provider’s list provided by the insurance company is outdated. I was searching online and I found the Center. I didn’t see the Center is on the insurance list, but a feeling told me to give them a call. I’m so glad I did. Angela was the sweetest person I have encountered over the phone. Her compassion and caring heart just poured out after she heard my niece’s story. Even though their office won’t be able to help with what my niece needs, she still went above and beyond to offer help. She took initiative to call the surgeon’s office to get the surgery info to help moving forward. In today’s world, you don’t see or hear something like this happen anymore, I am very grateful for experiencing this in Davis, CA. It gives me hope for the society and the values people still hold. They can do this for a stranger, can you imagine what they will do for their own patients ? So if you are looking for an oral surgeon’s office, I highly recommend the Center to you! They don’t know that I’m posting this ( I normally don’t), this is from the bottom of my heart. Thank you Angela, I wish the best for you and the Center. Wen DePriest

Dr. Albadawi, the technicians, and the staff are all very polite, professional, and a treat to be served by! I had two implants set today and the process was smooth and easy. I've been here once before and the level of service and care is spectacular. Definitely recommend for any oral surgery needs 😊

I don’t always share on here but I wanted to. I was terrified to get my wisdom teeth taken out. I have been avoiding it for years and finally I broke one of my wisdom teeth was having such bad pain from the break I had no choice. I searched for a few days for an oral surgeon to take them out and all had a long wait time. I called on a Friday and by Monday I was getting my wisdom teeth removed. Mind you this was days before Christmas. So I was so glad to find a place to squeeze me in on short notice. Even though I was terrified, the pain was so bad I needed to do it. The team was so friendly and supportive even though I was extremely afraid. They talked me through the prep process and that was super helpful. I wish I could remember the woman’s name who held my hand while I was going under she was truly so helpful. I was so nervous and afraid and she was very friendly (and so was everyone else) but her holding my hand really helped me when I was scared. It’s been 10 days post op and I’ve healed up very well. I still have some soreness and discomfort but every day it gets better and I’m sure I’ll be back to myself in no time. I highly recommend this place if you need oral surgery.

My daughter had to have all four wisdom teeth removed, a week before she moved into her college dorm at Davis. She was so nervous and had to be fully put under. It was extremely hard for me waiting in the waiting room and not being there for her, but, from start to finish everyone was absolutely amazing. The gals at the front desk kept me distracted while the surgeon and his team took great care of my baby girl. Let me just add, we were supposed to have her teeth pulled at another oral surgeon, but something about them made me so uneasy and overly anxious. I didn’t think I had an option to take my girl somewhere else since they were referred by our dentist. However, motherly instinct set in and I called Davis Oral Surgery, they verified insurance, did a consult and scheduled her. All within a week. Thank you Angie and your partner (shame on me for not knowing her name), for your kindness and PATIENCE!! even though I called like five times. I was so stressed and overwhelmed and from the moment I called you, and you assured me it would be okay and I felt so much better. It doesn’t seem like a big deal to most, but my daughter is all I have so everything is a big deal to me. So thank you! Thank you 🙏🏼

Such a friendly office that shows they care about the patient. It was very comforting to have skilled professionals pull my husband's tooth. They made him feel relaxed and pulled hi bad tooth in a short amount of time. Thank you so much for the wonderful care you took with him.
