What Is Anesthesia?

Anesthesia refers to the use of medicine to induce a temporary loss of awareness and sensation. While local anesthesia eliminates painful sensations, general and IV anesthesia are useful tools in oral surgery in that they address other aspects of the procedure that patients may wish to eliminate as well, such as sounds, feelings of vibration, and stretching of the cheeks and tongue.

Benefits of anesthesia in dentistry

  1. Eliminates Discomfort—Due to their complexity, some dental procedures can be uncomfortable. IV sedation and general anesthesia eliminate sensation entirely.
  2. Helps Worried Patients Relax- Many people feel anxious about oral surgery. When patients know they will receive anesthesia, they are less likely to worry about their procedure beforehand and less likely to put off an important dental procedure due to anxiety.
  3. Improves Oral Health- When patients feel confident about keeping appointments for important dental work, their oral health improves.
  4. Makes Procedures Safer- Since patients do not move under anesthesia, dental procedures are safer.
  5. Makes Procedures Faster- Oral surgeons can accomplish more in one appointment with a patient under anesthesia. They can work more quickly and efficiently.

Anesthesia Options We Offer

Intravenous Sedation- Oral surgeons give patients anti-anxiety medication through an IV. This medication helps patients relax. They may not completely lose consciousness, but will likely not remember the procedure.

General Anesthesia- This technique is similar to intravenous sedation, but the oral surgeon uses different medications that cause the patient to lose consciousness. The patient will sleep through their procedures with no sensation or awareness.

Good Candidates for Anesthesia

Most patients who need oral surgery are good candidates for anesthesia. Patients with the following medical conditions should consult their physician and our office before scheduling an appointment:

  1. Sleep apnea
  2. Pregnancy
  3. Seizure disorders
  4. Heart disease
  5. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

Frequently Asked Questions About Anesthesia in Dentistry

How safe is dental anesthesia?

Dental anesthesia is safe for most patients. The oral surgeon will review your individual medical history at your consultation to see if you are a candidate for anesthesia for your procedure. If needed, he can consult with your physician or other medical specialists. Safety is of the utmost importance here at Davis Oral Surgery & Implant Center.

Can patients have dental anesthesia in the office?

In most cases, we can perform dental procedures needing anesthesia in the office. Sometimes, however, a hospital setting is more appropriate.

Will patients remember anything from their procedures?

Patients should not remember anything from the appointment if they have IV sedation. With general anesthesia, patients will be asleep and will not remember the procedure.

How long does it take general anesthesia to wear off?

Most people feel sleepy for a few hours after waking up from anesthesia. Most of the effects of general anesthesia are gone within 24 hours.

Can I drive home after dental anesthesia?

Patients must not drive on the day of their oral surgery. They will need a responsible adult driver to bring them to and from our office. They must not drive or operate machinery for 24 hours following the appointment.

I’m not a patient at the center, but the help I have received from them is beyond words. I’m here at UCDavis to help my niece (19 year old international student) with her medical and dental care needs after an electric scooter accident. I work as an administrator in medical field in another State, it has been very hard for me to get things done that she needs here. I was looking for a dental surgeon after her jaw surgery, and nobody from School Student Health and insurance company could point me to the right direction. The provider’s list provided by the insurance company is outdated. I was searching online and I found the Center. I didn’t see the Center is on the insurance list, but a feeling told me to give them a call. I’m so glad I did. Angela was the sweetest person I have encountered over the phone. Her compassion and caring heart just poured out after she heard my niece’s story. Even though their office won’t be able to help with what my niece needs, she still went above and beyond to offer help. She took initiative to call the surgeon’s office to get the surgery info to help moving forward. In today’s world, you don’t see or hear something like this happen anymore, I am very grateful for experiencing this in Davis, CA. It gives me hope for the society and the values people still hold. They can do this for a stranger, can you imagine what they will do for their own patients ? So if you are looking for an oral surgeon’s office, I highly recommend the Center to you! They don’t know that I’m posting this ( I normally don’t), this is from the bottom of my heart. Thank you Angela, I wish the best for you and the Center. Wen DePriest

I don’t always share on here but I wanted to. I was terrified to get my wisdom teeth taken out. I have been avoiding it for years and finally I broke one of my wisdom teeth was having such bad pain from the break I had no choice. I searched for a few days for an oral surgeon to take them out and all had a long wait time. I called on a Friday and by Monday I was getting my wisdom teeth removed. Mind you this was days before Christmas. So I was so glad to find a place to squeeze me in on short notice. Even though I was terrified, the pain was so bad I needed to do it. The team was so friendly and supportive even though I was extremely afraid. They talked me through the prep process and that was super helpful. I wish I could remember the woman’s name who held my hand while I was going under she was truly so helpful. I was so nervous and afraid and she was very friendly (and so was everyone else) but her holding my hand really helped me when I was scared. It’s been 10 days post op and I’ve healed up very well. I still have some soreness and discomfort but every day it gets better and I’m sure I’ll be back to myself in no time. I highly recommend this place if you need oral surgery.

My daughter had to have all four wisdom teeth removed, a week before she moved into her college dorm at Davis. She was so nervous and had to be fully put under. It was extremely hard for me waiting in the waiting room and not being there for her, but, from start to finish everyone was absolutely amazing. The gals at the front desk kept me distracted while the surgeon and his team took great care of my baby girl. Let me just add, we were supposed to have her teeth pulled at another oral surgeon, but something about them made me so uneasy and overly anxious. I didn’t think I had an option to take my girl somewhere else since they were referred by our dentist. However, motherly instinct set in and I called Davis Oral Surgery, they verified insurance, did a consult and scheduled her. All within a week. Thank you Angie and your partner (shame on me for not knowing her name), for your kindness and PATIENCE!! even though I called like five times. I was so stressed and overwhelmed and from the moment I called you, and you assured me it would be okay and I felt so much better. It doesn’t seem like a big deal to most, but my daughter is all I have so everything is a big deal to me. So thank you! Thank you 🙏🏼

Such a friendly office that shows they care about the patient. It was very comforting to have skilled professionals pull my husband's tooth. They made him feel relaxed and pulled hi bad tooth in a short amount of time. Thank you so much for the wonderful care you took with him.
