What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are today's most advanced option for replacing damaged or missing teeth. After receiving dental implants, you can chew, talk, and smile without worry.

Types of Dental Implants We Offer

  • Single-Tooth Dental Implants: These implants are the most common and appropriate for patients missing a few teeth. Each implant has a titanium screw that replaces a tooth’s natural root, a stainless steel abutment, and a dental crown to complete the restoration.
  • Immediate Dental Implants: Frequently, damaged teeth can be removed and replaced with an implant in a single appointment. Immediate dental implants can help restore a patient’s smile up to six months faster when compared with traditional implants.
  • Dental Implant-Supported Fixed and Removable Prosthetics: For patients missing multiple teeth, implant supported bridges and appliances can restore large gaps. Certain appliances can be made to be removable or fixed, depending on your desires and goals.
  • Full-Arch Implant-Supported Dentures: If patients are missing most or all of their teeth, full-arch implant-supported dentures may be the best choice. Implants are utilized as anchorage for dentures and partial dentures in order to stabilize the appliances while chewing. Since only a handful of implants are needed for support, they represent a better value than multiple single-tooth implants and can instantly reshape a patient’s smile.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Attractive - Many dental implants look so much like natural teeth that no one can tell they are in place. Patients enjoy showing off their new smiles.

Long-Lasting - The implant post itself can last a lifetime if properly cared for. The crown or denture on top may need replacement occasionally due to normal wear.

Retain Jaw Bone Mass - If patients leave a space after losing a tooth, they quickly lose jaw bone mass. Promptly replacing the tooth with a dental implant helps maintain the health of the jaw bone.

Keep Other Teeth from Moving - Leaving spaces between the teeth can also allow teeth to move. Teeth may become crossed and crooked. Crooked teeth are harder to clean, and patients may develop new cavities or gum disease.

Eat Without Restrictions - People with missing teeth or standard dentures already know how difficult eating can be. With dental implants, patients can eat hard, chewy foods like corn on the cob, steak, and apples.

Who is a Good Candidate for Dental Implants?

Most people who have missing or damaged teeth are excellent candidates for implants. Since we surgically place implants, patients must be in good health to receive them. Non-smokers or those willing to quit permanently are better candidates because tobacco can slow healing.

Patients need a healthy jawbone to receive implants. However, they can receive bone graft surgery before implant placement if they do not have enough bone mass.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Implants

How long do dental implants last?
Implants last longer than traditional dentures, crowns, and bridges. While the implant post often lasts a lifetime, the abutment and the artificial tooth may need replacement every five to 15 years.
Does insurance cover dental implants?
In some cases, dental insurance may pay part of the cost of the implants. Patients should check with their insurer to determine the details of their policy.
Can dentures be made into implants?
While we cannot turn a partial or full denture into implants, we can help in converting your appliance into an implant supported one in coordination with your dentist. Your dentist can evaluate if your current appliances can be converted, or if a new, high-quality set of dentures can be made to snap onto the implants. We can also make a set that will not need daily removal.
How long does it take to get dental implants?
The process from start to finish for a standard single-tooth implant is typically several months. First, the oral surgeon extracts the tooth and places a bone graft, which must heal before placing the implant post. After placing the post, it takes approximately four months for your body to grow bone around the implant, a process known as Osseointegration. Once the implant is stable in your bone, your dentist places the artificial tooth (crown, bridge, or denture). With immediate dental implants, we can place the post at the same time as the extraction for patients with adequate bone mass. Prior to treatment, we evaluate your bone quality during your consultation appointment to evaluate if you would be a candidate for immediate implant placement.
What is the success rate for dental implants?
Implants succeed in over 95% of cases. Dental implants should have a long life as long as patients care for their oral health, including brushing, flossing, and making all recommended dental visits.
